Ron Paul - the other (libertarian) face of the U.S. Republican party

Image
If it was not a given fact, you would never believe that McCain and Ron Paul belong to same Republican party . Ron Paul is the only Republican presidential candidate who supports a non-interventional and constitution compliant foreign policy . Surprisingly Paul got the most funds for his presidential campaign from officers of the U.S. Army. In fact he raised more money from U.S. soldiers than all other Republicans and Democrats together. In his opinion a true Republican conservative has to be against non-constitutional war (like the Iraq war) and to be a non-interventionist . Actually the U.S. conservatives are for a " less regulation policy " and an intervention into the policy of a foreign country constitutes the biggest intervention imaginable. Ron Paul: "Terrorism is a tactic -- you cannot have a war against a tactic!" Republican debate Summary of Ron Pauls views Technorati Tags: Republican,Libertarian,Presidential Election Campaign,non-i

Candidates@Google: John McCain, a proud Vietnam veteran who is going to bestow freedom to the world

Image
In Germany there is the notion of " Leitkultur " (eng. analogous: defining culture) which was introduced by the German conservative party ( CDU ). McCain, the republican president candidate is a great exemplification of this notion. Hence he believes to know what is the best way the world has to go and this way have to be the republican way of evolvement . McCain is also a do-gooder because he wants to spread the American way of life, culture and democracy all around the world . In fact he believes this is the only true way of doing things right. Furthermore he believes that Iran, an autonomic country with an old culture and many educated citizens which have elected their president democratically and clearly, have no right to possess nuclear weapons .

How to download the final release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Due to driver issues and other reasons Microsoft have not mentioned explicitly the public access to SP1 for Windows Vista has been delayed until "mid-March". But if you an inpatient, backup your system regularly and do not have to worry about braking it, you can try the following hack to get the final release of Vista´s SP1 a little bit earlier. Using this hack you will get the regular final release of SP 1 and not any "special version". If you have already installed a Release Candiate of SP1, you have to uninstall this Windows Vista RC first .   Executing the following script with admin privileges (save it as a plain text file with a ".cmd" extension ), will allow you to get Vista SP1 via the usual "Windows Update" dialog a bit earlier: @echo off reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\VistaSp1 /f > NUL 2>&1 reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\W

How to resize Windows partitions after VMware disk expansion

If a VMware HDD becomes small, you can enlarge it using vmware-vdiskmanager . Unfortunately you can only expand a virtual disk. If you want to reduce the size of a virtual disk, this disk have to be a "growable" disk which corresponds in vmware-vdiskmanager to "-t 0" or "-t 1". After expanding a virtual disk image with vmware-vdiskmanager and booting Windows, the operating system still shows the outdated small size of the disk. Now you have to tell Windows that the disk partition became larger. There is an onboard tool called " diskpart " which you have to execute with admin privileges to expand a NTFS partition to the full size of the disk. To accomplish this, you have to do the following after calling diskpart from the command prompt or using Windows PowerShell: list disk % to show available disks list volume % to show available volumes % now select the corresponding disk and volume ; in my case these are disk "0" and v

Forecast: Adobe will open source its Flash technology to delay its downturn

Macromedia´s Flash technology revolutionized the web and this was obviously one of the reasons why Adobe has acquired Macromedia. Flash facilitated browsers to play multimedia content and allowed users to interact with this content. The shady sides of Flash are: The technology base is quite old It is written in C or C++ which is good for performance but horrible for code maintenance and platform independence efforts. High level languages like Java or C# is much better suitable for such kind of applications today. There is still no 64 bit version of Flash. This is especially on x64 Linux machines a problem because you have either to run a x86 browser or a flash wrapper. However both consume much CPU time because Flash occasionally was treated very stepmotherly as it was ported to Linux . Flash content cannot be read by search engine crawlers because the content is stored in binary form. In the times of the semantic Web 2.0 such binary content producing technologies are not appreciated

Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative and the Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL) -- the permissive MIT/X11 resp. BSD-like OSS license from Redmond

Also Microsoft has discovered the advantages of OSS driven software development and released an own OSI approved OSS license called Ms-PL which is also used for MSDN Code Gallery . Unlike the GPL, the Ms-PL is a permissive software license that allows make closed source derivatives from existing project licensed under this license. Therefore the Ms-PL is comparable to the MIT/X11 or the BSD license . There is a nice overview about software licenses offered by Microsoft's Shared Source Initiative which currently consists out of three licenses. Aside from the Ms-Pl there is also the Ms-RL and the Microsoft Reference License . Thereby the Ms-RL is Microsoft's most restrictive shared source license that allows licensees to view source code in order to gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of a given technology . This license is primarily used for development libraries that behavior under certain circumstance cannot be explained by natural language well. The Micro

Forecast: Firefox will disappear or at least lose its significance

The open source browser Firefox is going to lose its market share for the benefit of Webkit rendering engine based browsers . Firefox came up in a time as Microsoft's Internet Explorer was not improved for years. Despite many user requests Microsoft was not willing to implement the nowadays omnipresent and revolutionary "tab feature". People started to look for free alternatives and found the Mozilla browser (turned into Firefox) which had this coveted feature. However the technology base of Firefox is quite cumbersome and not really suitable for RAD . As a result of the approach to develop a browser, Apple took the open source rendering engine KHTML and made webkit which is the (quite fast) rendering engine of Apple's Safari browser. As Webkit had to keep the LGPL this rendering engine can be used in other (also closed source) browsers. Furthermore Webkit has a much cleaner and better readable code than Firefox' Gecko engine and is going to be adopted by Qt4

Microsoft buys Yahoo!

Microsoft Microsoft is going to acquire Yahoo! what seems to be a good deal for Microsoft as well as Yahoo which has no money for innovative projects. On the other hand Microsoft has a poor webservice pipeline and its search engine, MSN Search is used by just a small percentage of users. Hence the acquisition appearing to be a win-win deal which is appreciated by both sides. But Microsoft can use Yahoo's webservice coverage to coerce users to use Microsoft's Internet Explorer for certain webservices offered by Yahoo .
